1. Informed & Experienced
At a minimum, a financial coach should be both informed and experienced. While nobody knows everything, you want a coach who knows what they’re talking about and has a demonstrated history of helping people. A good financial coach will be able to share their knowledge with you and help you put that new information into action that will benefit you in a real way.
2. Focused on Achieving Results
At the end of the day, what you want from any coach is for them to be able to get you results. It doesn’t matter how nice they are or how much information they share if they can’t get you the results that you’re looking for. A good financial coach will help you set and meet your goals.
3. Zero Judgement
If you wanted to get judged for your financial decisions, you could just post them on social media and wait for all the trolls to surface. A coach is meant to help you, not judge you. If someone makes you feel intimidated, embarrassed, or ashamed, those are red flags. Find a coach who makes you feel excited and empowered to make decisions aligned with your goals.
4. Tailored guidance based on your goals
You can get all the generic information you want from the internet. When working with a coach, you want someone who will give you guidance specific to your situation, your experience, and your goals. Many financial decisions will depend on particular circumstances as well personal preferences, so avoid coaches who use over-generalized language like “all debt is bad,” “never rent,” and “always pay in cash.”
